The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has affirmed former federal lawmaker Nasiru Garo as its candidate for Kano North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
Garo’s emergence followed the party’s decision to replace Sunusi Danbatta as its substantive candidate for the senatorial election.
The affirmation was made at a ceremony held at the party’s senatorial office in Bichi, Kano, on Friday. The Kano NDC chairman, Usaini Riga, said the party reached the decision after extensive consultations and consideration of Garo’s experience and previous service in the National Assembly.
Mai Riga, who was represented by the party’s Zonal Vice Chairman, Bello Yandaki, said the affirmation brought the party’s internal process for selecting its candidate to an end.
He urged party members in Kano North to unite behind the candidate and intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls.
Danbatta, who withdrew from the race, described his decision as voluntary and pledged to work for the success of Garo and other NDC candidates.
He assured the party leadership and supporters of his continued commitment to the party, saying he would cooperate fully with Garo to achieve victory in the election.
In his acceptance speech, Garo pledged to provide inclusive and effective representation if elected.
He promised to carry members and supporters of the party along while appealing to voters across the senatorial district to support his candidacy and the NDC’s political agenda.
Garo is a three-time former member of the House of Representatives, where he represented the Gwarzo/Kabo Federal Constituency.
His legislative experience, according to party officials, would strengthen the NDC’s campaign and provide the basis for its promise of effective representation in Kano North.
The NDC Kano State Organising Secretary, Sunusi Kwankwaso, said Garo’s candidacy would boost the party’s preparations for the 2027 election.
He said the party would focus its campaign on issues directly affecting constituents, including economic empowerment, agricultural development, education, healthcare, infrastructure and improved representation.
Kano North Senatorial District comprises 13 local government areas, and the party is expected to intensify its grassroots mobilisation across the district as the election approaches.
Garo has already commenced consultations with political stakeholders, party members and residents across the 13 local government areas as part of efforts to build support for his candidacy.
Party leaders at the event called on members to remain united and work collectively towards securing victory for the NDC in the 2027 general elections.
