A new rivalry is set to take centre stage in Nigeria’s celebrity boxing scene as content creator Carter Efe and rapper Speed Darlington prepare to face each other on October 1 in Lagos.
The much-anticipated bout will be staged at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of the “Chaos in the Ring” series promoted by Balmoral Promotions. The fight will also be streamed live on DAZN.
The announcement was made by the promoters on Instagram on Sunday, with the contest described as a meeting between “Two African stars” where “the ring decides who stands tall”.
“IT’S OFFICIAL! CARTER VS SPEED. Two African stars. One ring. No excuses. On October 1, the ring decides who stands tall. Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. Live on @daznboxing. This isn’t just a fight. It is CHAOS!” Balmoral Promotions said.
A Fight Built On Rivalry
Although this will be the first time Efe and Speed Darlington meet in the boxing ring, the contest has been brewing since Efe’s emergence as one of the leading personalities in Nigeria’s celebrity boxing circuit.
Efe’s profile in the sport rose significantly after he defeated street-pop singer Habeeb “Portable” Badmus by unanimous decision in May.
The victory at Chaos in the Ring 4 marked a major upset, with Efe controlling the three-round contest through cleaner combinations, movement and well-timed punches.
The judges unanimously awarded him the fight, with each scoring the contest 30-27 in his favour.
Following the victory, businessman Emeka “E-Money” Okonkwo fulfilled a ₦50 million pledge made to Efe for defeating Portable.
Portable had entered the contest with victories over both Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington, making Efe’s win particularly significant in the growing celebrity boxing circuit.
Darlington’s Second Chance?
For Speed Darlington, the October bout offers an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding his previous appearance in the ring.
The rapper, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, faced Portable in 2025 after a public disagreement between the pair developed into a boxing contest.
Portable dominated the opening round before Darlington failed to return for the second, handing Portable a technical knockout victory.
Darlington later attributed the defeat to “juju” and other supernatural forces, although the claim was his own account of what happened.
Rather than ending his interest in celebrity boxing, the defeat appears to have fuelled his desire for another opportunity.
After Efe defeated Portable in May, Darlington turned his attention to the new winner, mocking Portable over his defeat before challenging Efe to a fight.
His challenge has now resulted in a confirmed contest, giving Darlington the opportunity to face the man who most recently defeated his previous opponent.
Celebrity Boxing
The Efe-Darlington showdown comes at a time when celebrity boxing continues to attract significant attention in Nigeria, with entertainers increasingly taking longstanding public disagreements into the ring.
The circuit has produced several high-profile encounters, including the rivalry between Portable and Nollywood actor Charles Okocha.
In July, Okocha defeated Portable in their rematch at the Balmoral Convention Centre after the singer abandoned the ring following a chaotic opening round.
The result reversed their first encounter in December 2023, when Portable defeated Okocha at Landmark Beach, Lagos. Their rivalry was reportedly linked to a disagreement over an alleged ₦40 million business deal.
What To Expect
The October 1 event will take place on Nigeria’s Independence Day, adding another attraction to an already highly publicised contest.
While the venue and broadcast details have been confirmed, the promoters have yet to announce the complete undercard, weight category, number of rounds, purse or official start time.
For Efe, the contest represents a chance to reinforce his position after his victory over Portable. For Speed Darlington, it is an opportunity to prove himself against the man who now occupies the position he has been chasing.
When the two entertainers enter the ring on October 1, their rivalry will finally move from social media exchanges and public challenges to a physical contest inside the ring.
