In a major casting overhaul for one of television’s most anticipated video game adaptations, former WWE superstar and actor Dave Bautista has officially been tapped to lead Prime Video’s live-action God of War series as the warrior Kratos.
The announcement comes after actor Ryan Hurst, who was cast as the “Ghost of Sparta” in January 2026, suffered a severe bicep tear during set rehearsals. The injury required surgery and an extended rehabilitation period that would have halted production until at least 2027.
Rather than delay the high-stakes project, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television opted to recast the lead role. With two seasons already ordered to shoot back-to-back in Vancouver, filming will now restart from scratch in the coming weeks, requiring all completed footage featuring Hurst to be reshot.
Bautista, 57, confirmed the news on social media by posting iconic concept art of the character, ending weeks of fan speculation across gaming and film communities.

“Following the death of his wife, Kratos and his son Atreus set out on a perilous journey to spread her ashes from the highest peak in the realms,” the studio shared in an official synopsis. “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be human again.”
The decision to scrap initial footage and restart production underscores the massive financial commitment Amazon and Sony are making toward the franchise. Video game adaptations have enjoyed a critical and commercial renaissance in recent years, led by hits like The Last of Us and Fallout.
By locking in Bautista and committing to a seamless two-season shoot, studios are positioning God of War as a flagship fantasy tentpole.
