Nigeria’s Falconets will face Colombia in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, with both sides chasing a place in the last four and a chance to move closer to the coveted title.
The encounter in Łódź comes as Nigeria continue their impressive tradition at the tournament.
The Falconets are set to feature in their ninth quarter-final, drawing level with the United States for the second-highest number of last-eight appearances. Only Germany, with 10 quarter-final appearances, have reached this stage more often.
Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals in emphatic fashion, producing a commanding 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16.
The Falconets took control through a spectacular individual effort from midfielder Rafiu, who cut in from the left, weaved past the England defence and fired a powerful effort beyond goalkeeper Katie Cox in what could prove to be one of the goals of the tournament.
Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma was equally crucial to Nigeria’s success, producing a brilliant X-block save to deny England forward Princess Ademiluyi before later keeping out Rachel Maltby’s penalty. Uzoma pushed the spot-kick onto the crossbar and away from danger.
Nigeria subsequently extended their advantage when Akekoromowei struck a well-taken left-footed volley, while Mamudu completed the scoring to seal a thoroughly deserved victory.
The result marked a remarkable turnaround for Moses Aduku’s side, who failed to win either of their opening two matches in Poland before finding their rhythm with a resounding 10-1 victory over New Caledonia.
The Falconets then carried that momentum into the knockout stages, stunning England to set up a quarter-final meeting with Colombia.
Aduku, however, has urged his players to put the England victory behind them and remain focused on the challenge ahead.
“After the game against England, I told the players, this game is gone, let’s have a short celebration because we have the next game to play so let’s focus on the next one,” the Nigeria head coach said.
For Nigeria, the quarter-final is a chance to return to the semi-finals for the first time since Canada 2014, when Asisat Oshoala was among the Falconets’ standout players.
Tough Test In Colombia
Standing in their way is a Colombian side with an impressive record at the competition.
Across their four appearances at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Colombia have never been eliminated before reaching the quarter-finals. They secured their latest place in the last eight after defeating hosts Poland 1-0 in the Round of 16.
Despite being second-best for significant periods of that encounter, Carlos Paniagua’s side showed resilience to secure a major upset and keep their title hopes alive.
Colombia midfielder Juana Ortegon says the team is determined to take the competition one game at a time while keeping its ultimate ambition firmly in sight.
“We will play match by match. We are very happy to be in the quarterfinals, so we will think about Nigeria first, but this team will always compete to win. Our dream is to win the world title, but we’re going match by match,” Ortegon said.
Colombia will also be looking to erase memories of their last appearance at this stage two years ago, when they were eliminated by the Netherlands on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Sixteen years after their last appearance in the semi-finals, the South Americans now have another opportunity to make history.
With Nigeria arriving on the back of consecutive emphatic victories and Colombia bringing resilience and tournament experience, the quarter-final promises to be a closely contested encounter.
The winner will advance to the semi-finals, while the losing side will see its World Cup journey come to an end.
